Sutherland Shire Carers and Consumers Forum has been operating in its current form since late 1997 and has continued to act as a voice for people who are in receipt of Home and Community Care (HACC) services or are eligible to be. The Forum is held four times a year. Transport and respite are available and lunch is provided during each meeting. Service providers don't attend, except by explicit invitation. Support staff who attend are the Forum Support Worker, the Carer Support Worker and the HACC Development Officer (all employed by Sutherland Shire Community Care Network). Other support workers, not involved in direct provision of services eg the Aboriginal HACC Support Worker, may also attend the Forum sometimes as guest speakers.
The Forum Support Worker plans and facilitates the Forum as well as to following up issues that arise at the Forum. An executive group of members of the Forum meets informally with the Forum Support Worker to assist in planning each Forum.
Project Objectives:
- To provide carers and consumers with information to assist them in their daily living.
- To give carers and consumers the opportunity to give feedback and have an input into the nature of services they receive.
- To provide a meeting point for carers and consumers to raise issues of mutual concern and find a means of expressing that concern to the relevant authorities.
- To provide a social opportunity for people who may be isolated because of their disability, their frailty or their caring responsibilities.
