Carer Support Service

Logo

A carer is a relative or friend who cares for someone who, because of chronic illness, disability or frailty, would be unable to remain living independently in the community without such care. The purpose of the Sutherland Shire Carer Support Project is to improve the quality of life of carers by supporting them in their caring role.

The outcomes pursued by the Project are:

  • That carers are supported in their role.
  • That people who are frail aged, have a disability or chronic illness, can remain in their own home for as long as is possible.
  • That the project operates in an effective, efficient and accountable manner.

Project Objectives:

  • To work to the objectives and guidelines of the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program and the objectives of an annual work plan
  • To increase community awareness of carers' needs through community development work
  • To provide an information service to provide accurate referral advice to HACC and other services and assist carers in their caring role
  • To advocate on behalf of individual carers and work with other services to ensure the rights of carers are being met
  • To support and resource the development of carer involvement in HACC in the Sutherland Shire and their input to regional and statewide development of HACC by identifying gaps in service provision
  • To identify gaps in HACC funded service provision
  • To resource current carer support groups and identify the need for and develop new groups, particularly those targeting "hidden carers"
  • To facilitate educational, training and recreational programs for carers
  • To develop and maintain appropriate links and networks with other services in Sutherland Shire and, at other levels, liaise where appropriate with relevant levels of government, service providers and carer peak organisations
  • To fulfil the requirements of SSCCN policy and procedures, including reporting regimes, staff meetings, appraisals etc
